- ／ クライオニクスとは何か？ 人類は不死に手が届くのか！！ いま話題の技術の真相に迫る！ 理系必読の一冊です！！＼【作品紹介】クライオニクスとは、延命を目的として使用される「生体凍結保存技術」のことです。この技術は、現在の医療では治療が困難である患者を低温で長期保管して、そして未来で蘇生させるために使用されます。イメージ的には、SF作品に登場するコールドスリープに近い技術といえるでしょう。また、クライオニクスは「未来での患者の蘇生」のみではなく、「シンギュラリティに到達した後の高度な抗老化医療や再生医療を享受する」という用途にも応用が可能です。このため「実用的なレベルで完成したクライオニクス」は、不老長寿や不老不死といった人類が太古より求め続けてきた願望を具現化していくための強力な技術的ツールにもなり得ます。しかしながら、この「クライオニクスの実用化」のためには解決しなくてはいけない深刻な問題が複数存在し、これまでとは異なる新しい「解決手段」が必要です。『まんがでわかる クライオニクス論』では、登場人物である3人の高校生たちが、クライオニクスの現状を徹底的に調査し、更にはクライオニクス実用化のための「解決手段」を探究していきます。－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－【監修】清永怜信 博士（分子生物学）【原作】橋井明広 博士（理学）【漫画】高原 玲【企画】脱DNAプロジェクト委員会－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－－【補足説明】（クライオニクスの現状での未解決問題などについては、「試し読み」にある「サンプル」からも確認できます。）・現在、海外で実施されているクライオニクスでは「ガラス化凍結法」という非晶質化の手法を用いるのが主流になっていますが、この「ガラス化凍結法」を使用した方法では「有機溶媒を高濃度に含む溶液を多量に体内に入れる」というプロセスが存在し、現実的な保管方法と捉えることは難しいと考えられます。本作品では、この有機溶媒の使用の問題点についても解説しています。上記のような「ガラス化凍結法」を用いたクライオニクスの処置が行われるのは、当然のことでありますが、患者が医学的に死亡したと確認された後で、これによりクライオニクスによる凍結保存は法律的に許容されています。また、日本国内にはクライオニクスの処置、及び保管を行う施設は存在しませんが、過去に日本人がロシア国内の施設に保管された例があります。・クライオニクスの和訳として、一部では「人体冷凍保存」という用語が使われることもありますが、この「人体冷凍保存」は完全に誤訳で意味として正しくありません。クライオニクス（Cryonics）の「Cryo」は低温を、「ics」は技術や学問領域を意味していて、直訳すると「低温技術」となり、このようにクライオニクスの言葉としての本質は「保存」ではなく「技術」にあります。また、クライオニクスは凍結保存の対象を「ヒト」に限定していません。本作品では、クライオニクスの発展可能性、及び凍結保存の対象の範囲を考慮して「生体凍結保存技術」という用語を採用しています。・クライオニクスとコンセプト的な部分が類似した技術に「人工冬眠」があります。技術開発の目的が「治療が困難な患者の延命」にある点で、クライオニクスと人工冬眠は共通していますが、クライオニクスが「代謝を完全に停止させる（無代謝にする）」のに対し、人工冬眠は「代謝を低下させる（低代謝にする）」という相違があります。この「無代謝」と「低代謝」という違いにより「どの程度の未来にまで到達させるのか」というタイムスケール的な目標設定が大きく異なります。・本作品では、シンギュラリティ（技術的特異点）に到達した後のナノテクノロジーによって「クライオニクスにおける蘇生段階の全ての課題は解決可能である」という楽観的な立場をとらずに、「現実的かつ実用的なクライオニクスの確立」を目標に設定して、その方法論について解説しています。
