It is nearly smokeless while flames are going and briefly smokes once the flames are extinguished. The rocket stove has nearly Constant addition of fuel and stoking which requires appropriate fuel nearby before starting to cook. Pencil to drumstick size fuel is enough to keep the fire burning. Ashes build up under the fire quickly, therefore having a long, green stick as a poker on hand is recommended to push the ashes to the back. It is also possible to restart the fire from coals by loading tinder into the chimney.
