What is SENNELIER DArtigny Oil Pastel Fixative used for?

SENNELIER DArtigny Oil Pastel Fixative is specifically designed to protect oil pastel artworks from smudging, dust accumulation, and moisture damage. By spraying this fixative over your completed art piece, you create a protective barrier that secures the pigments in place. This is especially beneficial for artists who work with layered oil pastels, as it helps maintain vibrancy and longevity. For example, after finishing a detailed piece, apply the fixative for maximum durability, allowing you to display or transport your work with confidence.

Is the SENNELIER Oil Pastel Fixative spray safe for indoor use?

Yes, the SENNELIER DArtigny Oil Pastel Fixative is safe for indoor use. It contains low levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), making it suitable for artists who prefer to work in enclosed spaces. However, it is still advisable to ensure proper ventilation during application. The fixative effectively adheres to the oil pastels and dries clear, making it an ideal choice for both studios and home environments where creating art is a daily routine.

How do I apply the SENNELIER DArtigny Oil Pastel Fixative?

To apply the SENNELIER DArtigny Oil Pastel Fixative, hold the can approximately 12 inches away from your artwork and spray in light, even coats. It’s important to apply just enough to cover the surface without saturating it, as this can lead to discoloration or loss of texture. Multiple thin layers are more effective than one thick layer. This method is ideal for protecting intricate details in your art, ensuring that your work maintains its integrity and appearance over time.

Can I use this fixative on other mediums besides oil pastels?

While the primary use of SENNELIER DArtigny Oil Pastel Fixative is to enhance and protect oil pastel works, it can also be used on charcoal, graphite, and pastel drawings. The fixative's formulation allows it to secure these mediums without compromising their textures. Artists often use it to finish mixed media pieces where oil pastels are combined with other materials, ensuring the overall cohesion of the artwork and protection from potential smudging or fading.

Does the oil pastel fixative change the appearance of my artwork?

SENNELIER DArtigny Oil Pastel Fixative is designed to dry clear, ensuring that it does not alter the original colors or textures of your artwork. When applied correctly, the fixative enhances the vibrancy of oil pastels while maintaining their soft, blendable quality. This way, you can confidently finish your artwork without worrying about loss of color clarity or texture, which is particularly important for layering techniques where subtle details matter.

How long does it take for the fixative to dry?

The drying time for SENNELIER DArtigny Oil Pastel Fixative is typically around 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the ambient temperature and humidity levels. It’s essential to avoid touching the artwork during this time to prevent smudging. Artists appreciate this fast-drying feature, especially when working on multiple pieces or needing to showcase their work promptly. Always ensure the area is well-ventilated to speed up the drying process further.

Can I use the fixative on canvas?

Yes, SENNELIER DArtigny Oil Pastel Fixative can be used on canvas surfaces, making it versatile for various artistic applications. When using it on canvas, ensure the oil pastels are fully dry before applying the fixative to avoid blending issues. This allows artists to create stunning textural contrasts in their pieces, especially when working on larger canvases. The fixative provides a durable finish that is suitable for both display and handling.

Is it necessary to shake the fixative before use?

Yes, it is essential to shake the SENNELIER DArtigny Oil Pastel Fixative canister thoroughly before use. This helps mix the contents evenly and ensures correct application. Shaking before use also prevents clogging of the nozzle, allowing for a consistent spray pattern. This step is crucial for achieving an even layer on your artwork, ensuring maximum protection without affecting the finish or texture.

How many applications do I need for optimal protection?

For optimal protection of your oil pastel artwork, it's recommended to apply 2 to 3 light coats of SENNELIER DArtigny Oil Pastel Fixative. Light layers help achieve uniform coverage without saturating the surface. Allow each coat to dry completely before applying the next, as this ensures maximum effectiveness. This multi-coat approach is particularly helpful for larger or more intricate pieces where color vibrancy and detail retention are critical.
