Answer: 3 total shelves. This is a one-sided unit. We also have two sided unit total 6 shelves. -

How much weight does it hold?
Answer: I am not sure. We had a shelf and one half of paperback books. The wheels on the cart do not hold up at all!! One broke within the first couple of weeks. They sent us a new side with a new wheel and another wheel broke so we cannot move it around. It has to stay in one place because the wheels are not sturdy enough for the bookcase. -
