Drama Editorial Review
The film Tokyo Decadence, also known as Topaz, tells the story of Ai, a young woman working at an S&M establishment in Tokyo with hopes of becoming a social worker. Throughout the film, Ai meets various people who teach her about the world, but ultimately she must follow her own path in life. Directed by Ryu Murakami, the film is a slow-burning deConstruction of emotional detachment in a cruel and jaded society. Although the film's sexual content may appear to be the allure, it is only the canvas or the background of the story, and Murakami's intent is to explore the human condition. Despite the film's unsavory and taboo topics, Murakami doesn't exploit his characters but instead, depicts them with wry humor and an almost utter contempt for the vapidness of life when people become disconnected from themselves. Unlike some mean films in the west where the protagonist may truly be sexually brutalized, the characters in Topaz never injure anyone. It serves to show how the Japanese search for human connection despite their culture's outward appearance of normalcy and decency. The beautiful and mesmerizing actress Miho Nikaido's portrayal of Ai elicits perfect melancholic sadness and brings life to a poignant and intricate film.
