The "Field Guide to Plants of Costa Rica" is an essential asset for novice and experienced gardeners alike. It is written to be understood by non-botanists and has a pictorial guide at the beginning to clarify botanical descriptors which are necessary. This book provides comprehensive information about the foliage, flowers, fruit, habitat, range, and nativity of various plant species. Although it is impossible for the book to cover every plant in Costa Rica, it does an excellent job of representing the flora of the country. The photos and descriptions are all clear and useful. The book is small enough to carry in the field, making it a perfect reference guide for horticulturists and arborists. The flowers, fruits, and other prominent characteristics used for arranging the plant photos in the book make identification difficult if the plant does not have those features at that time. The illustrations are small and of limited detail, but given the size of the book and the number of plants covered, that is understandable.
