Tascam Digital Editorial Review
The Tascam DR-40X is a flexible audio recorder that offers guitar amp and cabinet model effects for electric guitarists laying down demo tracks through headphones. Despite its built-in speaker not being of good quality, it does have a headphone jack that allows you to listen to your recordings. The DR-40x can record multiple stereo tracks, but you're limited to just two passes, or you have to do intermediate mixdowns for each new pass, which you cannot remix all together on the DR40X but you could load into a DAW and remix. The built-in mics are suitable for recording interviews, though for special types of recording such as recording low-frequency drums, you may want to use an external mic that picks up sound below 40Hz. It's also portable, easy to use, and plays back great sound quality, making it ideal for recording audio for videos, and recording outdoors. However, the recorder's point of failure is in its headphone jack. It's poorly ruggedized and will eventually stop making a stereo connection. It is also the Achilles' heel of this otherwise amazing device.
