Faulkner'ın yarı-kurgusal bölgesi Yoknapatawpha'da geçen Abşalom, Abşalom!, Thomas Sutpen'in ve sonunda kendi oğulları tarafından mahvedilen planının -1830'larda, Missisippi'de bir hanedanı ağır ağır sürdürmek- hikayesi üzerine kurulu. Kitab-ı Mukaddesten Güney'in efsanesine, oradan da modern dünyanın karmaşısına uzanan roman, farklı anlatıcılar aynı olayları üst üste anlattıkları için tekrarlar üzerine kuruluymuş sanısı yaratır; aslında okuyucudan doğrunun eksik anlatımlarından geçerek, doğruyu daha derin bir biçimde kavramesı beklenmektedir.
