Customer Questions & Answers
-
Question:
What is KDF55 Filter Media used for?
Answer: KDF55 Filter Media is primarily used for removing chlorine, heavy metals, and bacteria from water. Its unique copper-zinc formulation promotes oxidation-reduction reactions that can lead to significant improvements in water quality. This filter media is especially effective in reducing harmful contaminants, making your water safer for drinking, cooking, and bathing. In practical use cases, individuals often install KDF55 in their home filtration systems, ensuring cleaner water for sensitive tasks such as infant feeding or for people with compromised immune systems. -
Question:
How does KDF55 compare to other filter media?
Answer: KDF55 stands out among other filter media due to its dual-action capabilities. It not only removes chlorine but also reduces heavy metals like lead and mercury through its oxidation process. Unlike standard carbon filters that primarily address taste and odor, KDF55 targets a broader range of contaminants. Users often report clearer, tastier water when using KDF55 alongside carbon filters, effectively enhancing their overall filtration system’s performance, making it a solid choice for community well water or areas with known contaminants. -
Question:
Is KDF55 safe for drinking water?
Answer: Yes, KDF55 is considered safe for treating drinking water. Its components are compliant with the standards set by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for water filters. KDF55 excels in ensuring that the water you consume is free from harmful chemicals and biological contaminants. Many households invest in KDF55 systems to combat the adverse effects of waterborne pathogens, ensuring that every drop used for cooking or drinking is clean and healthy. -
Question:
How long does KDF55 filter media last?
Answer: The lifespan of KDF55 filter media typically depends on the water quality and flow rate. However, it can last up to several months to over a year in standard usage conditions. Users often notice a decline in performance when the media becomes exhausted, characterized by an increase in chlorine taste or odor. Regular testing and monitoring can help determine when it's time for a replacement. Many individuals choose to replace KDF55 as part of their scheduled maintenance to ensure optimal filtration and a consistent supply of clean water. -
Question:
Can I use KDF55 in my existing water filter system?
Answer: Absolutely! KDF55 filter media can be added to various types of existing water filtration systems. It's often used in conjunction with sediment or carbon filters for enhanced contaminant removal. Simply integrating KDF55 can boost the overall effectiveness of your system, especially if you’re focusing on chlorine or bacteria removal. Users often configure KDF55 within shower heads or sediment filters to create a multi-stage filtration approach that addresses a wide range of water quality issues. -
Question:
What are the benefits of using KDF55 filter media?
Answer: Using KDF55 filter media offers diverse benefits, including improved water taste and odor, reduced harmful contaminants, and overall better health outcomes. Its ability to effectively battle chlorine, bacteria, and heavy metals makes it a popular choice in residential and commercial applications. By ensuring higher water purity, individuals often experience fewer health issues linked to water quality, making KDF55 particularly beneficial for families with young children or elderly members who may be more sensitive to contaminants. -
Question:
How should KDF55 filter media be stored?
Answer: KDF55 filter media should be stored in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to maintain its effectiveness. Keeping it in an airtight container can also help prevent contamination before use. Proper storage ensures that the media retains its filtration capabilities when installed in your system. Many users find that organized storage not only preserves the media’s integrity but also allows for easy access when it’s time for replacement, promoting a proactive approach to maintaining water quality. -
Question:
Do I need any special equipment to install KDF55?
Answer: No special equipment is required to install KDF55 filter media as it is designed to fit easily into standard filtration systems. Typically, all that's needed is a wrench for connecting hoses or fittings, depending on your specific setup. Users often report a seamless installation process, enabling them to enjoy cleaner water shortly after adding the media. For those interested in DIY solutions, detailed installation guides are readily available, making it straightforward to enhance your home water filtration. -
Question:
What contaminants does KDF55 effectively remove?
Answer: KDF55 effectively targets a variety of contaminants, including chlorine, lead, mercury, and bacteria, making it a versatile choice for water filtration needs. This media excels at removing these pollutants through its oxidation-reduction process, ensuring cleaner and safer water. Users often employ KDF55 in applications such as showers and kitchen sinks, where they wish to minimize exposure to harmful chlorine and bacteria. Integrating KDF55 can result in water that is not only safer but also significantly better tasting. -

LiquaGen Editorial Review
CuZn's granular KDF-55 Filter Media is heavy and depending on the application + nature of the filter system itself, it may be necessary to factor in the density of the media and how much pressure may be lost. This media is utilized in some gravity flow applications but the density of the material and how much can be used depends on things like head pressure from upper reservoir, diameter of gravity flow cartridge, other media utilized, axial vs. radial flow, etc. When filtered, KDF media removes up to 98% of water-soluble cations (positively-charged ions) of lead, mercury, copper, nickel, chromium, and other dissolved metals. The KDF55 media also reduces the levels of arsenic present but won't remove them entirely while it targets and reduces soluble cation heavy metals such as lead, chromium, cadmium, barium, arsenic, and mercury, among others. The product can be added to birm and create a bacteriostatic environment within the filter system you're planning to build. The KDF media should be compatible with Birm. The media is also recyclable as copper, and many metal scrap yards pay for it.
